From Food Truck to Tucson Favorite

Seis began in 2012 as a modest food truck, where the Muñoz family shared their love of Mexican cuisine with Tucson neighborhoods. Over the years, their dedication and creativity turned Seis into a full brick-and-mortar restaurant at Mercado San Agustín, eventually expanding to multiple award-winning locations.

The Muñoz family draws inspiration from different regions of Mexico, blending traditional recipes with fresh, inventive flavors that honor their ancestors’ culinary heritage. Each dish reflects the spirit, history, and traditions passed down through generations, keeping the flavors of the past alive while delighting diners with something new.

At the heart of Seis’s story is a cherished family brick, likely used by their great-grandfather in building St. Augustine Cathedral. Given to them when Seis opened, the brick is a tangible reminder of their family’s generations in Tucson, inspiring them every day as they continue the legacy of food, culture, and family traditions.

Authentic Mexican Flavors with a Modern Twist

At Seis, the Muñoz couple brings authentic Mexican flavors to life in every dish, honoring their ancestors’ culinary traditions while blending in fresh, inventive touches. From award-winning tacos to garden-perfect produce, Seis has become a community favorite, a restaurant rooted in family, culture, and Tucson history.

Locally Sourced and Community-Focused

Seis takes pride in using fresh, local ingredients whenever possible, from sustainably caught seafood to Arizona-raised beef, cage-free poultry, and locally sourced pork and chicken. Local partnerships further highlight regional flavors, including Queen Creek Olive Mill for olive oil, freshly roasted coffee from Presta in Mercado San Agustín, and seasonal produce from nearby Arizona farms.

The Heart of Tucson: Mercado San Agustín

Opened in 2010, Mercado San Agustín was Tucson’s first public market, designed to celebrate local culture, artisans, and food. Unlike typical malls or plazas, the Mercado brings together small food makers, restaurants, and artisan vendors in one lively, colorful space. Murals, music, and bustling stalls create a vibrant atmosphere that is both a marketplace and a cultural hub.

For Tucson’s food scene, the Mercado is invaluable. It gives small restaurants like Seis a space to thrive, allows local makers to share their craft, and connects visitors with authentic flavors they cannot find anywhere else. The open-air design encourages mingling, discovery, and a sense of community that is rare in commercial spaces. Spaces like this do not just serve meals; they nurture community and keep culinary traditions alive.

What We Enjoyed

Al Pastor Tacos – Award-Winning Favorite

Al Pastor is a piece of culinary history. Originally from central Mexico and inspired by Lebanese immigrants, it combines chilies, pineapple, and spices on a trompo. At Seis, these tacos are grilled over open flame and topped with fresh onions, cilantro, and pineapple salsa.

Poc Chuc – Tucson Twist Traditionally, a Yucatan pork dish marinated in citrus and grilled over fire, Seis offers a fresh take with locally raised chicken. Tangy, smoky, and light, this award-winning dish blends tradition and local ingredients to create a modern favorite.

Grilled Halibut Taco – Fresh and Light

Fresh fish grilled over open flame locks in moisture and adds subtle smokiness. Served with crisp vegetables and bright salsa, this taco is light, summery, and bursting with fresh flavor. As a Master Gardener, I am picky about produce, especially tomatoes, but Seis serves them so fresh and perfectly ripe they taste like they came straight from the garden. Truly, Seis does not disappoint.

Atmosphere, Sides, and Drinks

Dining at Seis is as much about the experience as the food. Outdoor seating lets you soak in the lively Mercado energy while savoring every bite. Do not miss the sides: creamy, smoky smashed beans, sweet and charred elote, and other accompaniments that elevate the senses with rich, authentic flavors. Pair your meal with refreshing margaritas, agua frescas or locally roasted coffee from Presta Coffee across the Mercado for a perfect Tucson experience.

Overall Rating

★★★★★ — Outstanding in food, freshness, atmosphere, and service

Seis delivers an authentic taste of Tucson’s Mexican culinary scene, combining tradition, quality ingredients, and community energy in every dish.

Food for Thought

  • Outdoor seating and plaza energy: Bring a sweater; it can get chilly in winter or shaded areas. The plaza can get lively, so expect some background noise.
  • Popularity and portions: One of the best Mexican restaurants in Tucson, lines are possible during peak times. Portions are generous and easy to share.
  • Accessibility and parking: The Courtyard is uneven in places, and there are a few steps to the adjacent businesses. Metered parking is nearby or a lot across the street.
  • Hours of Operation: 8 am – 9 pm daily. Breakfast is also available at the Mercado location. Seis Website

Seis delivers fresh ingredients, lively atmosphere, and dishes that tell a story. Plan your visit with an appetite and a sense of adventure. You will leave with a full belly and a true taste of Tucson culture.
